What Are Hydrosols and Why Should You Be Using Them?

I'm always looking to optimize my skincare routine for the best possible results. But this isn't always easy, especially since I'm committed to using clean ingredients.  This is why I am so excited to tell you about hydrosols.  If you haven't hopped on the hydrosol train yet, it's time to. These nutrient-filled sprays are mild yet powerful, and they're made from plants.

What are Hydrosols?

Hydrosols are essential oils' lesser-known cousins. But lesser-known does not mean less effective. Hydrosols are a powerhouse full of anti-inflammatory and pH-balancing properties that'll leave your skin glowing.

But what exactly are they?

Hydrosols are created by distilling plant materials like rose petals, eucalyptus, and lavender through steam. This process produces both essential oils and something called a "hydrolat", AKA a hydrosol. These hydrosols are packed with all of the natural plant goodness that essential oils have but without the heaviness and potential irritation. This makes them perfect additions to clean beauty routines.

Why Should You Use Hydrosols?

Not only are hydrosols gentle on the skin, but they're also relaxing and soothing. They carry the slight aroma of whichever plant they're made from, but they're not overpowering, so you can incorporate them into your daily routine.

I love using a eucalyptus hydrosol in place of toner. While commercial toners are exceptional at balancing your pH, they're often filled with unnecessary amounts of chemicals. Hydrosols, on the other hand, have a pH of around 4.5 to 5.5, which mimics your skin's natural pH level. So, they still carry the same balancing benefits that toners do but without all of the alcohols.

Since their chemical makeup is so simple, you can use hydrosols at any point throughout the day. They make the perfect refresher, especially as the winter chill sets in. And they improve your skin's health as you use them. By strengthening your skin's moisture barrier and helping it protect itself against bacteria and free radicals, hydrosols truly are your skin's best friend.

How to Choose the Right Hydrosols?

The best part about hydrosols is how customizable your experience with them can be. Since every plant offers its own set of benefits, each hydrosol does, too. For example, a lavender hydrosol will melt away your stress. Plus, lavender is lauded for its anti-inflammatory properties, so it'll help you banish acne and redness for good

Or, if you're hoping to add some extra moisture to your skin, you can incorporate a rose hydrosol that'll leave your feeling looking soft and healthy. As someone who deals with acne, aloe vera & cucumber is my favorite type of hydrosol. Aloe moisturizes the skin, prevents bacteria growth on the skin, which stops breakouts before they happen and helps fade dark spots.

There are so many options when it comes to choosing a hydrosol, so no matter what your skin needs, there's definitely something for you!

Mark your calendars because our hydrosol collection will launch on February 16, 2023!
